Christmas readings

Hi guys!

I'm sorry for having been away for a while... But now I'm back and finally on a regular base! :-)

In the meanwhile Christmas is coming... together with all its celebrations, the Winter season, (hopefully) some snow and long cozy Sunday afternoons to spend in company of a good book.

Already some ideas in terms of books you would like to read or you would like to receive as a Christmas present? Or that you would like to buy as a gift for someone else?

Mi dispiace essere stata via per un po'... Ma finalmente sono tornata e su base continuativa! :-)

Nel frattempo sta arrivando il Natale... con tutti i suoi festeggiamenti, la stagione invernale, (si spera) un po' di neve e dei lunghi confortevoli pomeriggi domenicali da trascorrere in compagnia di un buon libro.

Avete già qualche idea di che cosa vi andrebbe di leggere o di quali libri vi piacerebbe ricevere? Oppure che vorreste comprare come regalo per qualcuno?

Es tut mir Leid länger weg gewesen zu sein... Aber nun bin ich endlich wieder regelmäßig da! :-)

In der Zwischenzeit nähert sich Weihnachten... mit seinen Feiertagen, der Wintersaison, (hoffentlich) etwas Schnee und langen gemütlichen Sonntagnachmittagen, die man in Gesellschaft eines guten Buches verbringen kann.

Habt ihr schon einige Ideen von Büchern, die ihr gerne zu Weihnachten bekommen möchtet? Oder die ihr gerne irgendjemandem schenken würdet?

Charlotte vs Emily Brontë

Desidero dedicare il primo post del 2013 (anno che mi auguro si riveli essere magnifico per tutti voi!) ad un tema che mi sta particolarmente a cuore e di cui volevo scrivere già da diverso tempo. Ormai i miei gusti letterari li conoscete e sapete che il ‘700-‘800 inglese mi va particolarmente a genio. J Ho parlato svariate volte di Jane Austen (cliccate QUI e QUI per leggere miei precedenti post che la riguardano), ma ci sono anche altre figure che apprezzo moltissimo, quali Charlotte ed Emily Brontë. Le due sorelle inglesi (assieme ad Anne, la terza) hanno sicuramente lasciato il segno nella letteratura ed i loro rispettivi romanzi più famosi “Jane Eyre” e “Cime tempestose” sono conosciuti direi da chiunque (chi non li ha letti, ha visto almeno il film; chi non ha visto il film ne ha sentito comunque parlare; e di solito chi non ne vuole sentire parlare, ha una fidanzata/moglie/figlia appassionata che ne parla di continuo J). Ma la questione che spesso ci si pone è: Charlotte o Emily? Se la critica pare aver deciso, pendendo a favore di Emily (definendo la sua opera un “capolavoro” e attribuendo a quella della sorella solamente l’etichetta di “classico”), tra i lettori il verdetto non sembra essere così unanime. Non ho intenzione di scatenare una competizione inappropriata tra le due sorelle (penso sarebbero le prime a non gradirla), ma sono curiosa di conoscere le vostre preferenze a riguardo. Posto che entrambi i romanzi rientrano tra le mie letture preferite, io personalmente mi permetto di votare per Charlotte. Trovo Jane Eyre infatti un personaggio fantastico e non solo perché si tratta di una figura fuori dagli schemi per il proprio tempo (ammettendo liberamente di amare un uomo sposato in un’epoca, quella vittoriana, in cui la donna era ritenuta essere sostanzialmente paria ad uno scolapasta come sentimenti e desideri). Il principale motivo per cui mi piace è perché Charlotte ha dovuto romanzare la sua autobiografia per renderla appetibile al pubblico e agli editori (il primo tentativo di raccontare il suo stesso amore per un uomo impegnato ne “Il Professore” venne inizialmente respinto), compiendo quindi uno sforzo in più, mettendo insieme le parti della sua vita sia reale, sia immaginata per raccontare se stessa al mondo. Non riesco ad immaginare lavoro più duro di questo, ma allo stesso tempo più affascinante.

I’d like to dedicate my first post of 2013 (I really wish you all the best for the new year!) to a topic which is very important to me and it’s now a long time I wanted to talk about it. You already know my taste in terms of literature and will have noticed that I particularly enjoy everything dealing with 18^th and 19^th century English literature. J I have written several times about Jane Austen (click HERE and HERE to read some of my previous posts about her), but there are also other authors I love, like Charlotte and Emily Brontë. The two English sisters (together with Anne, the third one) and their most famous novels, Charlotte’s “Jane Eyre” and Emily’s “Wuthering Heights” are well known by everyone (those who did not read them, have watched the movies, those who didn’t watch the movies have at least heard something about them, and those who don’t want to hear anything about them, usually have a girlfriend/wife/daughter who is mad about them J). But the question is: Charlotte or Emily? If the critics seem to have chosen Emily (defining her novel a “masterpiece” and the one of the sister nothing more than a “classic”), the readers’ judgment is not that unanimous. I definitely don’t want to start a bloody competition between the two sisters (I’m pretty sure they’d be the first ones to dislike it), but I’m curious to know your opinion about it. Both novels belong to my favorites, but I would probably vote for Charlotte. In my opinion Jane Eyre is a wonderful character and not only because of her innovativeness (since she admits openly to be in love with a married man -  and in those days, in the Victorian Age, women were considered to have almost the same feelings and desires of a colander). The main reason why I like her so much is that Charlotte had to novelize her life in order to get accepted by readers and editors (her first attempt to describe her own love to a married man in “The Professor” was refused at first), she had to make a greater effort, putting together both her real and her imagined life to talk about herself to the world. I can’t imagine a harder job, but at the same time a more fascinating one.

Meinen ersten Eintrag des Jahres 2013 (ich hoffe, dass dieses Jahr für euch alle wundervoll sein mag!) widme ich einem Thema, das mir sehr zu Herzen liegt und über das ich schon seit einiger Zeit sprechen möchte. Inzwischen kennt ihr schon meinen literarischen Geschmack und wisst, dass ich für die englische Literatur des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts eine besondere Vorliebe habe. J Ich habe schon des Öfteren über Jane Austen gesprochen (klickt HIER und HIER wenn ihr einige meiner älteren Posts darüber lesen möchtet), mag aber auch andere Autoren der Zeit sehr gerne, wie zum Beispiel Charlotte und Emily Brontë. Die zwei englischen Schwestern (zusammen mit Anne, der dritten) und ihre berühmtesten Romane, Charlottes „Jane Eyre“ und Emilys „Sturmhöhe“ sind allen bekannt (wer sie nicht gelesen hat, hat zumindest den Film gesehen, wer nicht den Film gesehen hat, hat zumindest von ihnen gehört, und wer von ihnen nicht hören will, hat garantiert eine Freundin/Frau/Tochter, die danach verrückt ist und ständig davon spricht J). Die Frage ist jedoch: Charlotte oder Emily? Wenn sich die Kritiker scheinbar für Emily entschieden haben (ihr Roman wird als „Meisterwerk“ bezeichnet, während der ihrer Schwester nicht mehr als ein „Klassiker“ definiert wird), ist die Stellungnahme der Leser nicht so offensichtlich. Ich möchte keinen blutigen Wettkampf zwischen den beiden Schwestern beginnen (sie wären die ersten so etwas nicht zu wollen), bin jedoch neugierig eure Meinung zu wissen. Beide Romane gehören zu meinen Lieblingslektüren, aber persönlich würde ich mich für Charlotte entscheiden. Meiner Meinung nach ist Jane Eyre ein toller Charakter und nicht nur weil er für seine Zeit absolut innovativ ist (damals, im Victorian Age, wurden den Frauen etwa die gleichen Gefühle und Sehnsüchte eines Kochsiebes zugeschrieben und Jane gibt offen zu in einen verheirateten Mann verliebt zu sein). Der Hauptgrund weswegen ich sie so sehr mag, ist, dass Charlotte Brontë ihr Leben zu einem Roman bearbeiten musste, um es ihren Lesern und Herausgebern gefällig zu machen (ihr erster Versuch ihre eigene Liebe zu einem bereits verheirateten Mann zu erzählen im Roman „Der Professor“ scheiterte anfangs nämlich), eine härtere Anstrengung wurde von ihr verlangt und sie musste ihr echtes und ihr imaginäres Leben verknüpfen um sich selbst der Welt zu offenbaren. Ich kann mir kaum eine schwierigere und herausfordernde Arbeit vorstellen, jedoch aber auch keine so faszinierende.

Qualche giorno fa ho appreso una notizia davvero sorprendente riguardo a Jane Austen: un anello (foto) che le era appartenuto verrà messo all'asta da Sotheby's il 10 luglio e si stima che verrà venduto per 31.000 - 46.000 $ ! Dopo la sua morte nel 1817 l'anello era andato alla famiglia e vi è rimasto fino ad oggi, ovvero fino alla decisione di metterlo all'asta. Esperti e studiosi della grande scrittrice inglese non erano a conoscenza del fatto che possedesse un gioiello simile... e così ancora una volta Jane Austen ha saputo stupirci!

Inoltre, se dovessi immaginare un anello al suo dito sarebbe proprio uno così: semplice, ma raffinato. E voi cosa ne dite? Non pensate che sia in perfetto stile Jane? :-)

Some days ago I got to know some surprising news about Jane Austen: a ring (picture) she once owned is going to be auctioned by Sotheby's on July 10 and its value is estimated to be between 31.000 and 46.000 $ ! After her death in 1817 the ring passed to her family, who kept it until today, that is until the decision to auction it. Scholars and experts of the great English novelist weren't aware of her owning such a jewel... so once again Jane Austen managed to amaze us!

Furthermore, if I had to imagine a ring at her finger it would be exactly like this one: simple but tasteful. What do you think? Isn't it really Jane's style? :-)

Vor einigen Tagen habe ich eine sehr überraschende Nachricht über Jane Austen erfahren: Ein Ring (Foto), der ihr früher gehörte wird am 10. Juli bei Sotheby's versteigert werden und sein Wert sollte etwa zwischen 31.000 und 46.000 $ liegen! Nach ihrem Tod im Jahre 1817 hat die Familie den Ring geerbt und bis heute besessen, d.h. bis zur Entscheidung ihn zu versteigern. Gelehrte und Experten der berühmten englischen Schriftstellerin wussten nichts ber die Existenz eines solchen Juwels... und so hat es Jane Austen noch einmal geschafft uns zu überraschen!

Noch dazu, wenn ich mir einen Ring an ihrem Finger vorstellen sollte, dann wäre er genauso wie dieser: Einfach aber elegant! Und was denkt ihr? Ist er nicht absoult in Janes Stil? :-)

The devil is in the detail: boookmarks

Quando ci vestiamo prestiamo attenzione agli accessori, giusto? Quando prepariamo una cena ci premuriamo di scegliere gli addobbi giusti per la tavola, no? E quando arrediamo una casa o scegliamo un'auto non siamo forse attentissimi ad interni e rifiniture...? Quindi direi anche la lettura di un bel libro richiede la scelta un bel segnalibro, siete d'accordo?! :-)

Di seguito ve ne propongo alcuni che mi hanno fatto letteralmente impazzire!  :-)

When we dress up we pay attention to the accessories, right? When we prepare a dinner we do our best to choos the right decorations for the table, don't we? And don't we pay a lot of attention to interiors and finishings when we are furnishing a house or choosing a car? So I would say that also a beautiful book requires a beautiful bookmark, do you agree?! :-)

Wenn wir uns anziehen, passen wir immer auf die Details auf, richtig? Wenn wir ein Abendessen vorbereiten suchen wir mit Aufmerksamkeit die Dekorationen für den Esstisch aus... oder nicht? Und wenn wir ein Haus einrichten oder ein Auto kaufen, widmen wir uns etwa nicht mit großem Engagement den Innenaustattungen? Ich würde also sagen, dass auch die Lektüre eines schönen Buches ein schönes Lesezeichen verdient, seid ihr einverstanden?! :-)

Molti di voi mi hanno scritto delle e-mail chiedendomi di parlare un po' di me. Ci ho pensato un po' ed alla fine ho deciso che il modo migliore per farlo (per restare in tema con il mio blog!) sia raccontarmi attraverso i miei consumi: in termini di brand che mi caratterizzano, che mi piacciono, di consumi sia ispirazionali, che aspirazionali, ecc.. Spero che l'idea via piaccia! E voi? Quali consumi/brand/attività vi descrivono meglio?

Many of you wrote me e-mails, asking me to say something about myself. I have thought about it for a while and finally I decided that the best way of doing it is describing me through my consumptions (due to the kind of blog!): in terms of brands which characterize me, which I like, of consumptions both in an inspirational and aspirational sense. etc.. I hope you like the idea! And you? What consumptions/brands/activities describe you the best?

Viele von euch haben mir E-mails geschrieben um mich zu fragen, ob ich etwas über mich erzählen kann. Ich hab ein bisschen nachgedacht und hab am Ende entschieden, der beste Weg dies zu tun ist mich durch meine Konsume vorzustellen (das scheint mir mit dem Blog koherent zu sein!): d.h. durch Marken die mich gut charakterisieren, die mir gefallen, durch Konsume die mich inspirieren oder die für mich aspirationell sind, usw.. Ich hoffe die Idee gefällt euch! Und ihr? Welche Konsume/Marken/Aktivitäten beschreiben euch am Besten?

It's tea time!

In moltissimi romanzi, soprattutto in quelli del '700-'800 inglese, il tè gioca un ruolo chiave: ci si incontra alle cinque de pomeriggio per bere un tè insieme, con l'intento di parlare, discutere, venire a conoscenza delle ultime novità, creare incontri,... Ci sono innumerevoli esempi di casi in cui il tè ricopre un ruolo centrale nelle vicende- dai romanzi di Jane Austen ad Alice nel paese delle meraviglie (potete vedere i miei precedenti post su questi libri cliccando)... E per voi che significato ha la tazzina di tè? Intanto vi lascio alcune immagini...

In many novels, especially in the English ones of the 18th and 19th century, tea plays an important role: people meet at five o'clock in the afternoon to drink cup of tea together, with the intention to talk, to discuss, to get to know the latest news, to arrange meetings and dates,... There are a lot of examples of cases in which tea is really important for the plot- from Jane Austen's novels to Alice in wonderland (you can have a look at my previous posts about these books by clicking)... And which meaning does the cup of tea have for you? In the meantime you can have a look at these pictures...

In vielen Romanen, besonders in den englischen des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts, spielt der Tee eine sehr wichtige Rolle: Um fünf Uhr nachmittags trifft man sich, um einen Tee zusammen zu trinken, mit der Absicht zu sprechen, miteinander zu diskutieren, die letzten Neuigkeiten zu erfahren, Treffen zu arrangieren,... Es gibt unzählbare Beispiele, in denen der Tee eine tatsächliche Hauptrolle hat- von Jane Austens Romanen bis Alice im Wunderland (wenn ihr clickt, könnt ihr meine Posts über diese Bücher lesen)... und welche Bedeutung hat die Teetasse für euch? Come avrete notato mi piace moltissimo il modo in cui Google "gioca" con il suo logo. Solo un brand molto forte può permetterselo! Approfitto di questa giornata per ricordare una mia selezione personale di due grandi donne della letteratura per ogni lingua del blog.

How you'll have noticed, I really like the way Google "plays" with its logo. Only a very strong brand can do so! I take this day to remind a personal selection of two great women of literature, two for each language of the blog.

Wie ihr bemerkt haben werdet, mag ich sehr die Art und Weise in der Google mit seinem Logo "spielt". Nur eine sehr starke Marke kann sich so etwas erlauben! Ich nutze diesen Tag, um zwei (pro Blogsprache) großer Frauen der Literatur zu gedenken -persönliche Auswahl.

Il ceruleo ai tempi di Jane Austen

Facendo un giretto per negozi si può notare come quest'anno siano tornati di moda i colori fluo: giallo, rosa, arancione, blu, verde evidenziatore-scintillante. Ciò vale soprattutto per scarpe, accessori e dettagli dei capi d'abbigliamento, ma vi è anche una buona quantità di vestiti, magliette, giubbini e quant'altro dalle tonalità accese ed allegre.


Oggi parlare di moda è come parlare del tempo: chiunque ne parla, chiunque ne sa (o pensa di saperne qualcosa), molti dicono di non seguirla (ma pensiamo solo un secondo alla celebre frase detta da Meryl Streep ne "Il Diavolo Veste Prada": "siamo ai limiti del comico se tu pensi di aver fatto una scelta al di fuori delle proposte della moda"... guardate il video su YouTube

... tutti comunque hanno un loro stile, qualunque esso sia.






Al giorno d'oggi è effettivamente molto facile avere uno stile, decidere se si è classici, trendy, trasgressivi, sciuretta, casual, casual-chic, ... ci saranno almeno un milione di termini per definire come si è o come si vuole essere. E si può non solo essere in più modi contemporaneamente, ma si può anche scegliere in che momenti (della vita, dell'anno, addirittura della giornata!) essere che cosa o chi.


Oggigiorno è effettivamente molto semplice esprimere il proprio modo di essere e comunicarlo agli altri- alle volte il modo è assolutamente esplicito: attraverso una scritta sulla maglietta o un'immagine, per esempio del nostro cantante o eroe preferito! Ci sono innumerevoli modi di manifestare quelle che sono le mille sfaccettature del nostro essere consumatori. Noi siamo davvero- prendo in prestito da Pirandello, forse a sproposito, ma spero me lo perdoni- "Uno, nessuno e centomila".


Abbiamo sì la nostra personalità ed i nostri tratti distintivi, che ci accompagnano costantemente, evolvendo gradualmente, ma la mattina per andare a scuola/in università/ al lavoro non ci vestiamo come quando siamo a casa in poltrona a guardare un film ed a smangiucchiare cioccolatini e nemmeno come quando usciamo una sera a cena. Fin qui, d'accordo, è sempre stato così sin dalla notte dei tempi. La "novità" però sta qui: tra cena e cena, seppure dello stesso genere, possiamo scegliere di essere, di vestirci, eventualmente truccarci e comportarci in modo diverso- e non si tratta solo di mettere o meno un abito nuovo! Pensiamo ad una cena tra amici in pizzeria: una ragazza arriva con un tacco dodici, un'altra con gli stivali da motociclista, un'altra ancora con le ballerine; un ragazzo arriva con la felpa, un altro con la camicia e un terzo ancora indossa una t-shirt sotto una giacca. E lo stesso ragazzo/a nella cena successiva può decidere di cambiare look, adottandone uno degli altri.


Si tratta di una libertà di cui spesso non ci rendiamo proprio conto, forse perché per noi è un dato di fatto.


Proviamo, però a pensare solo un secondo a miti come Jane Austen, Emily Dickinson o alle sorelle Brontë, tanto per restare nel femminile, o alle protagoniste nei loro romanzi. L'abbigliamento allora seguiva regole molto più precise di oggi (dove al massimo c'è scritto "cravatta nera" in fondo a certi inviti e si sa che a determinati eventi si deve andare con lo smoking o con l'abito lungo...) e molto più ferree. Oggi molto è demandato al nostro buongusto e buon senso (a volte sesto senso), insomma possiamo esprimerci come meglio preferiamo, per banalizzare e farla breve. Certo, anche oggi si viene giudicati (rivedi "Il Diavolo veste Prada"!), ma la questione è che sprigionare e comunicare il proprio stato d'animo attraverso la moda non è sempre stato scontato o almeno non così esplicito.


Quella ottenuta nel tempo è quindi sicuramente una bella conquista!
Però... proviamo a pensare solo per due secondi alla grandissima sfida che affrontavano quotidianamente la Austen eccetera. Dovevano farsi carico loro stesse di esprimere i propri sentimenti, senza demandarlo ad un total black con stivali e giacca di pelle nei giorni in cui si sentivano "aggressive" o senza ricorrere ai colori fluo per attirare l'attenzione e gridare al mondo il proprio buon umore. Secondo me in un certo senso è affascinante questo doversi impegnare con gesti e parole per esprimere se stessi e se vi capitasse di (ri)leggere questi romanzi, provate a pensarci: penso che sia un aspetto divertente che arricchisce la lettura!
